Kristina Lao serves up a hearty blend of country- infused folk-pop. Her music reflects her trans-national upbringing, speaking universal truths in nerdy, wordy ways. Her newest series of videos, First Take Songs, can be found on her YouTube Channel.

Influenced by lyrical masterminds including Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman, she has supported international acts including Frank Turner,(UK) and Ron Hawkins (Canada), and has worked with legendary writer-producers including Robin Millar (Sade) and Simon Darlow (Grace Jones, Toyah). She has played at London's finest indie venues, including Ronnie Scotts' Bar, The Bedford, The Troubadour, and The Jazz Cafe.

She received a prestigious scholarship for Music Performance at Hong Kong University, and is the first person from Hong Kong to be accepted into the London School of Musical Theatre.

"Mice", her first publicly released EP,is available on iTunes now. She is currently living and gigging in Vancouver.

MARCH 2017.

Last year,  The Acoustic Guitar Project (where you have one week to write and record a new song), gave me a kick in the ass that I sorely needed. So, this Chinese New Year, I gave myself a new creative challenge. I wanted something that would stretch me as an artist, spur me to learn new tunes and re-visit old ones, and unforgivingly catapult me out of my comfort zone. These days, I feel like my neural pathways are starting to become adrenalin junkies for challenges like this. I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

After a period of rumination, resistance and finally, resolution, First Take Songs was born. Ryan from Chicknskratch Productions is my content creation partner in this adventure. In addition to shooting and wrapping the takes up in a fantastic, filmic bow, Ryan has worked with me to understand my vision, creating the logos and aesthetic for the series. He pulls all the elements together with a gorgeousness and authenticity that only he can achieve.

If you’d like to follow my journey through original songs I’ve never recorded, new songs I’ve not yet played, and all the mishaps that come with it, subscribe to my YouTube Channel, or like the Official Facebook Page. I can’t wait to compare the first one to the last one. I hope you’ll stick with me through it - it gets lonely laughing at yourself, by yourself.

I started this series to celebrate my imperfections, share my progression, and learn some lovely lessons. When people ask me why I'm doing this, my response is simple: Sometimes one take is all you need. Other times, one take is all you get.

Now, it's up to me to get it done, and let it go.
